Hello Walking Fans!

If you're a walker, for sport, pleasure or out of necessity, you need a comfortable shoe.

But what's really a comfortable able walking shoe?

Actually there's no better way to determine that for yourself than to simply experiment with different shoes on your own. Of course that can be time consuming and expensive.

Here's a little help.

First of all think about what style of shoe you want. If you do a lot of walking for your job, you probably want a casual looking shoe that looks good with your business outfit. If you're an exercise walker a white sports shoe is probably what you want. For example, I'm taking a trip to Italy in May (whaaahooo! I'm excited) but my biggest concern is getting a walking shoe that will be as comfortable as it can possibly be.

Now, I've been told that when visiting Italy, white tennis shoes give you away as an American tourist and they should be avoided. Is this true? Not sure, but I'm not one to be conspicuous so I'm going to try to go for a walking shoe that's not a bright white sports looking shoe.

If you wear orthotics, have high arches, bunions, narrow or wide feet, these can all play a part in the best shoe for you. So think about what style you like, assess your foot needs and go with shoes that are known for comfort. When buying a shoe, be sure to read the buyer reviews. Most good online shoe stores offer them.

Based on reviews I've read, here's a few of the most popular and most purchased walking shoes that are primarily based on 'Comfort'. Haven't decided on which one I'm buying yet for my Italy trip -- but I'll let you know :-)

Asics gel Nimbus viii
This is a highly cushioned running shoe that is excellent for walkers as well. It enhances the foot's natural gait from heel-to-toe. The cushioning provides maximum front and rear foot shock absorption for all motions and it doesn't bind across the toe. They are also good for high arches. These shoes have pretty wild colors.

Mephisto
Mephisto is what comes to my mind as a primo walking shoe, everyone that wears them seems to love them and buy them a second time. They are a bit pricey but extremely comfortable. They offer great support in the heel. Any of their shoes offer perfect walking comfort. All of their shoes provide huge comfort.

New balance 659
This is actually a running shoe that gets high marks. It offers great support with great traction on roads and trails. Good shock absorption in the heel. Lightweight synthetic mesh, reflective detail for safety, outsole stabilizes the foot through your walking cycle.

Rockport walking shoes
Rockports for walking seemed to get average to low reviews. They offer moderate arch support and some shoes don't offer any. However, the Rockport world tour classic walking shoe did get rave reviews. Their not a stiff shoe and go well with slacks or jeans. They are also a good shoe for orthotics.

Reebok DMX
This shoe got some fairly good reviews for looks but lacked in the comfort department, probably because they take awhile to break in, however once broken in they can be a dream.

Reebok shoes also tend to squeak a bit. Make sure this does not bother you.

If you think about shoes, a few facts come to mind:

They can dress-up or dress-down an outfit

I personally love a new pair of shoes and I love to shop for shoes, but I gotta ask you ... who has the time to shop?

I work a thriving business and before that, I had a busy career with a house, kids and a home to take care of. So as much as I love to shop, I don't have much time left in the day to roam about the shopping malls.

Now the holidays are fast approaching. This is my favorite time of year, but again I ask you -- who has the time to wander the shopping malls? I sure don't. Life is just too busy and I guess I have to admit it -- The older I get, the less I like it.

Uh Oh --- I hope my daughter didn't hear that.

So what's a busy Gal like me to do when I need a new pair of shoes for that Christmas party or to to simply pick up my spirits?

I'm still not sure why more people don't do it. No wait, I think I know -- "I like to try them on and see how they fit"

Yep, I hear that a lot.

OK, there's something to be said for "trying them on for fit" I'll give you that one, but if you try them on at home and they don't fit, send them back "free of charge" and you can still have the right size sent to you within a few days.

Yep ... there is a little planning required. Do you have fat ankles?

Here are a few shoe buying tips that might give those thick ankles a better look.

Don't wear flat shoes with a thin toe. This can make your ankle look even fatter.

A high ankle strap strangles the ankle, and a low heel with a slight curve is gives
a look like it's going to snap under your weight.

A more substantial shoe looks in proportion to a more substantial ankle:

A chunky loafer is a good choice. Clogs and mules are a thick ankle's best friend.

A flat mule elongates the leg, giving the appearance of a thin ankle.

Slingbacks with slender heel ranging from 1.5" to 2" high with a slight curve and mules with a thin heel are not flattering if you have thick ankles.

If you wear a pump, make sure the heel comes straight down from the base of the shoe, which will give your ankle some shape.

A slingback can look good with a high, sturdy heel. Also, a heavy heel on a wedge mule will make your ankles appear thinner.

If you are lucky enough to have thin ankles…

Stay away from hefty heels. They dominate the shoe, make your feet look enormous and exaggerate the skinniness of your ankles.

More sleek looking heels will allow you to show off her ankles to the best advantage without the shoes detracting from them and drawing too much attention to your feet.

A slender heel is much more flattering for dainty ankles.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

Here's an interesting question I just received from a reader:

Q: I just returned from Baltimore where I visited my son. He walks everywhere so I put a lot of miles on my relatively new Clarks and suffered many blisters. Now I have information from another who also suffered extensive foot blistering in Baltimore. So maybe it is a Baltimore "thing"? In any event, do you have any recommendations to avoid blisters ? After all, it is Baltimore! Thank you in advance for your advice.

A: I would have to say it's your shoes. I like clarks and I have several pairs. In general, they are comfy shoes but if you're going to be doing "lots" of walking, they can rub in spots, so I don't recommend them for all day walking.

Mephisto, although rather pricey, makes some of the best shoes for walking and comfort. Rockports, Teva and New Balance are also great shoes for walking as well. Propet is another really good one that specializes in walking shoes. The moral of the story is: If you're doing all day walking be sure to get shoes that are meant just for that. Anything else, you may compromise your comfort and risk a few blisters.

Make Your Feet Look Smaller!

You may not be plagued with big feet but there are
plenty of us who are, and I'm one of them.

I've worn a size 9 shoe since high school, but the
worst part was being surrounded by friends wearing
size 3 & 4. I hated it.

Today, I'm more comfortable with my big feet.
First of all, in life, there are certainly bigger
things to fret about, and second, the problem is
remedied simply by buying shoes that make your
feet 'look' smaller.

Ladies, you'll be happy to know that high heels do
give the appearance of having smaller feet. The high
heel tapers the toes and arches the foot giving the
appearance of being small and delicate. Chunky heels
such as wedges do it even better than stilettos, and
of course, they're a bit easier on your feet.
Pointy toes can make your feel look longer.

If your foot is already long, perhaps this is not the
look you're going for, however, if having a wide foot
is what concerns you, then choosing a close fitting
pointy toe may be the answer.

Making a recent comeback in popularity is the
rounded toe shoe. This type of shoe can make the
foot shorter in appearance.
Steer clear of strappy sandals that expose most of
your foot, they can make your foot look larger. The
smaller the opening around your toes, the smaller
your foot will appear. Hence, the larger the
opening, the bigger your foot will appear.

Showing a little less of your toes with a nice
sling back is certainly fine. The more material
you have on top of your foot, as with closed toe
shoes such as with clogs, the longer your foot
will appear.

Just as with clothing, dark colors can make
your feet look smaller, however before stocking
up on all styles of black, step out with some
deeper tones of brown, grey and green or maybe
some of the yummy earth tones that have become
so popular. Shoe accents for women such as
buckles, bows or detailing will also make
your foot look smaller.

Gentleman who want a smaller look should find
a shoe with a tassel or straps that cross the
shoe near the toe.

As we head into the Spring and Summer months we're
thinking about getting outside. You'll be visiting local
sites, tourist attractions and possibly taking a great
vacation.

But no outing is fun if your feet hurt or you don't have

cushioning, support and good flexibility. Also if
you have over pronation or under pronation you will
need to compensate for that.

Motion control shoes
You want a good shoe for motion control. These are
rigid shoes designed to limit overpronation, these
shoes would be for someone with flat feet or heavier
people. These shoes have quite thick heels.

Stability shoes
These shoes have more flexibility but still provide
good support and durability. These are for people
who do not have motion control problems. and are of
midweight. These shoes have thick heels but not as
thick as motion control shoes.

Cushioned shoes
These shoes have soft midsoles and offer the least
support but are highly flexible. These are for people
that have no overpronation problems or need extra
support. People with high arches would find these
shoes desirable.

Be sure the shoe you are buying gives you enough
room in the toes and does not rub anywhere. A shoe
can seem comfortable when first put on but if it rubs
or is tight in any one spot it won't last long on your foot.

Women Buying Men's Shoes?

I read and research quite a bit when it comes to shoes and I'm finding that women with larger feet requiring larger shoes sizes are shopping in the mens department of shoes stores, Huh? Don't do that! Just because you have a larger foot than what is referred to as normal ( what is normal anyway?) doesn't mean you should settle for buying mens shoes.

If you have a larger foot print don't despair, the internet has made finding larger size shoes much easier, and believe it or not, I think shoe manufacturers are realizing that women with larger foot sizes do have style and are requiring good style, taste and glamour just like everyone else.

Naturally, when shopping online you can't try on the shoes you like, however, don't despair. Find a shoe store that features free returns. This makes it easier to return the shoes and get a different size or style.

Of course, there are stores that will order shoes in larger sizes for you. Your best bet for doing this is check with the smaller, privately owned shoe stores as opposed to the larger discount stores. Don't be afraid to ask them to order a shoe in your size. The smaller stores are generally more agreeable to special ordering, so always ask.

I shop online for everything! But; not everyone feels as secure as I do, including my husband :-(

I believe in many ways it's safer than mailing your bills or using checks.

Here's why:
Your credit card transaction is protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. This means you have the legal right to dispute charges for goods or services that were never ordered, never received, or misrepresented.

Some credit cards now provide "substitute" or "single-use" numbers, linked to your account. You can use these numbers for one purchase only (sometimes they can also be used for regular payments to the same company). Since you never put your real account number online, your financial information is safe from abuse by "hackers" or dishonest employees.

When you provide payment information, the "http" at the beginning of the address bar should change to "https" or "shttp." This indicates that this is a 'secure' shopping area.
Also, make sure your browser complies with industry security standards, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or SET Secure Electronic Transaction. This means that information is being encrypted, or scrambled, as it is being sent. For example, using internet explorer will display a little locked padlock symbol at the bottom right hand corner of your screen when making a purchase.

Buying the Right Sport Shoe

Your feet have 206 bones and over 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons.
It's important to take care of them by wearing the proper sporting
shoes.

Choosing the right pair of sport shoes is all important when it
comes to the comfort of your feet; however we often choose our
shoes according to how they look as opposed to fitting them for
the activity or comfort. I'm just as guilty as the next guy, after
all I know what I like in fashion so it's much easier to pick out a
what looks good as opposed to finding the 'correct' shoe for the
sport I'm interested in. That's definitely more complicated and
time consuming.

One common mistake I've made over the years is giving in to buying
the cheap shoe. BIG MISTAKE!

For example, let's say you are new to
running and want to get a pair of running shoes. Cheap shoes are not
made to form to your foot or absorb the impact of running. It's
is a sure way to disillusion your new found sport quickly as you'll
most likely quit after a few miserable runs.

If you participate in a sport on average of three times a week then
a shoe that costs between $75-150 would be a good bet. Of course the
best values are typically in the upper price range.

Wear the shoe that fits the sport. If you're walking wear a
shoe designed for walking. If running, wear a runners shoe and if
weight training wear the shoe that will support muscle activity.
Each shoe is designed for the strength, cushion and stability
in the areas that need it according to the type of sport you are
involved in.

Buying a properly designed shoe will certainly add to
your comfort as well as reduce injury. Shoes that have soles that
bend at the ball of the foot also offer much better support than
soles that bend under the arch.

The shoe's material should be flexible and allow your foot to
"breathe,". Shoes that have a mesh fabric are the best. A good sport
shoe is often light in weight and able to breathe.

You should also think about injury protection when buying your shoes.
Don't be fooled into thinking a shoe has to be heavy to offer good
support. If you have calf or Achilles tendon pain then heavy canvas shoes can
make the situation worse.

If you take care to buy the right shoes you'll get so much more out of
your favorite sport by sticking with it, reducing injuring and certainly

When ordering shoes online it's important to measure correctly. Here are afew tips and shoe size guide that may help you get the right size and ensure a correct order.
• Your feet are typically their largest at the end of the day. Just like our bodies shrink in height during the course of the day, our feet also get a bit larger during the day. Therefore, you get a much more accurate size when measuring at the end of the day.
• If you'll be wearing socks with your new shoes then wear those socks when measuring.
• Measure both feet and take the size of the larger foot.
• When measuring your foot, it is best to measure while standing, however if you are doing the measurement by yourself, you will get more accurate results if you sit in a chair, don't stand. If you have someone to help you take your foot measurement then have them measure you while standing.
• You may take measurements in inches or centimeters. To convert inches to centimeters, multiply inches by 2.54.
Measuring Your Foot
While seated, place your foot on a piece of paper in front of you.
Hold your pencil as straight as possible and trace around your whole foot.Try to keep the pencil leaning against your foot while tracing. Foot length To find your foot length, measure the distance between the two longest points on your tracing. Reduce this number by 5 mm, or 1/5-inch. The result is your foot length and the number you will use to determine your shoe size.
To convert to centimeters, multiply the measurement by 2.54.

Zappos shoes is noted for it excellent customer service and of course, free shipping but I had no idea that were as good as they were.

I ordered some shoes for my son at 7:00pm on Tuesday evening and expected the shoes to arrive probably by the weekend. Boy were we surprised!

They arrived the next day about 3:00 in the afternoon. My son was thrilled and so was I. The
